BODY PARTS TOUCHING:
When your getting a spray tan and we ask you to hold your arms out this is why. If you fold your arm like the top right photo the following images are what will happen, same with your legs or any skin touching skin while we are tanning you. This can also happen if you go home go straight to bed without putting on long pants. Any skin to skin contact will cause this but usually only for the first 10 mins while we are tanning you thats why its important to hold your arms away from your body. If the customer has larger boobies and we are going to ask them to lift or hold them up so we can spray the tummy make sure the technician hasn't tanned your arms before doing so otherwise this will happen. A trained technician will know this . THE FIX: If this does happen your technician will wipe the area and respray, if this happens when you get home just try to blend it with your hand and worse case use some moisturiser to blend. If you have noticed this after your tan has developed you may just need to blend it with some at home tanning lotion or call your technician with photos and advice. |
Try using our chocolate tanning cream, it very hydrating and easy to use
SHAVING RASH FROM WAXING:
This photo is combined with a shaving/wax rash but also tan will grab onto armpits if you have just shaved or waxed and your pits will be darker after a spray tan so let your technician know if you have recently shaved or waxed. THE FIX: Avoid having the armpit area tanned, naturally we dont tan there anyway so its best to just avoid the area and blend slightly around the armpit. If this has happened a small amount of after wax cream with tea tree oil will help to blend and soothe the area. |
Summer is here and with summer brings sweaty everything in NZ. We have hight humidity so when its a nice 25 degrees or 77 fahrenheit if actually feels about 28d or 82F. This moist NZ air causes havoc with some customers when getting a spray tan. Like in photo one, this customer waxed the day before but got a rash from it and when she got her spray tan it reacted like this. ANGRY. While we dont actually spray your armpit with your arms down all the time and that tiny little bit of moisture moves around and we end up with the following armpits.
|
Always tell your tan technician that this happens or if your tend to be a sweaty person. In our little studio we have flannels for customers to wipe their armpits and also underboobs (another sweaty spot). Other ways to help stop this is to apply a TALC FREE (very important) powder or baby powder not Johnson and Johnson to your armpits after tanning or even to your whole body, this can make you feel less 'sticky' also if you are tanning at home and this happens, after you have tanned put a tshirt on that is quite tight, meaning it fits under the armpit so there is no skin to skin contact.

SHOWERING BEFORE YOU COME FOR A SPRAY TANThere are a few reasons why we say shower and exfoliate/wax etc the day before your spray tan and here are the reasons why.
After you have showered your skin is very dry and your pores are open. Your PH level of the skin has been stripped away from the soaps, flannel, scrubber and hot water. Your body needs time for the pores to close and the natural oils of your body to return to ensure a great spray tan. Some salons offer a PH spray before your tan to get your skin to the optimum level but most do not so it is best to come not so squeaky clean. The photo above is someone who has just showered their pores is wide open and the tan has grabbed in little spots. |
SUNBURN AND TANNINGOK so you got burnt and want to know what to do. Image one we can fix up and definitely make it look better, we do have in salon a TUP touch up pen and can run tan just over the white bits so it isn't so noticeable but image number two with the peeling skin is the aftermath of photo number 3. Best thing is to moisturise moisturise moisturise and with aloe vera or some type of skin healing cream.
Yes we can tan you and it is best to use only organic natural spray tan solution as you don't need or want to be putting any chemicals on your body. Really you should wait and this is what we would advise as your skin needs time to heal. Image number 3 is just OUCH but in New Zealand this can happen in about half and hour with our ozone hole. Again we advise against tanning but I have tanned people with this sort of burn as we see it so much in NZ. Its best not to spray onto the red but spray the white bits which requires skill from the technician but can be done to make this look a lot better but again we advise not to and best to keep hydrating your skin but if you insist that you need a tan then an use organic solution never express or fast tanning solutions and get your technician to tan only the bits that aren't red. SPOTTY SKIN
KERATOSIS PILARIS
Have you ever looked at that weird bumpy skin on your upper arms and wondered what the hell it was? It’s called keratosis pilaris (colloquially known as “chicken skin”), and it’s easily recognizable as pinkish, rough skin that’s similar to permanent goosebumps and can be found on the back of your arms or legs. Keratosis pilaris results from the buildup of keratin — a hard protein that protects skin from harmful substances and infection. The keratin forms a scaly plug that blocks the opening of the hair follicle. Usually many plugs form, causing patches of rough, bumpy skin. No one knows exactly why keratin builds up. But it may occur in association with genetic diseases or with other skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis. Dry skin tends to worsen this condition.
According to the NHS, the condition is the result of an excessive build-up of keratin (a protein found in hair follicles) in the outer layer of your skin. The excess keratin blocks the hair follicles and, in turn, causes your skin’s pores to grow in size and become rough and bumpy. While it’s most likely to affect the skin on your upper arms and thighs, in rarer cases it can be found on your forearms, buttocks and upper back. It's symmetrical. KP will always appear on both arms, both legs, or both sides of your face. as cited http://www.zmonline.com/random-stuff/what-you-need-to-know-about-those-annoying-bumps-on-your-arms/ THE FIX

HOME TANNING AND WRINKLY BITS when you get older.Wrinkly arms and knees
Got to watch this one if your "of age" meaning your elasticity is heading off south. Make sure your arms are bent when tanning or getting a spray tan, this is easy to fix but easy to do, make sure you check as you probably won't know until someone points it out. THE FIX: Try putting on some tanning cream and rub into creases. At home tanning or lotions and potions:
lotions and potions Wax, moisturiser oil based or razor cream was on the legs at time of tanning and after the developing time and the bronzer has washed away where the oily moisturiser, wax or cream was the tan didnt take Home tanning, I have seen this many times from the blending process of at home tanning. This can happen from blending too much, rubbing too hard and usually is with a product that doesn't have a bronzer so person applying tan can't see where they are going. Some people do find that their elbow knees and feet 'grab' the product more as that is where the skin is dryer. This can also happen from SLEEPING in a tan and getting sweaty. This also happens from getting a wax the day of your tan, the wax has an oil residue that causes this as well as oily moisturiser, like some butters can leave a residue on the skin causing the tan to either grab or repel. THE FIX:
|
try our hero product the mist taNNING SPRAY
It's extremely hydrating and a no fail tan, suitable for all skin types and easy to apply, oh and its organic, cruelty free and vegan.
SUNBURN AND PEELING SKINPeeling Skin: This is the classic sign of peeling skin, customer got sunburnt the week before and had a spray tan then her skin started to peel.
THE FIX: Best way to fix this problem is to gently exfoliate the skin so it looks more even then apply tanning cream or use the TUP touch up pen to fix only the white area. |
TOO MUCH TANwhoa steady on there girl
JUST Too Much of a good thing This looks like the bottle has been poured on, this is clearly too much tanning solution. Where we can see the lines (the cracks) it is just too much solution and we can even see it under neat his/her feet. On the left foot where we can see a little white bit then some tan above it is from too much tan and wearing shoes and socks or sweaty feet in shoes has rubbed off but the tops has stayed tanned. If your feet tend to grab solution like this you can either ask your tanning technician to mist or not put any on your feet or moisturise your feet before turning up or do it after to help hydrate and minimise this staining happening, this is also good advice for people with dermatitis THE FIX: try a lemon sugar scrub or our Cherry Bomb Body Scrub or soaking in a bath/sauna/pool |
SWEATY PATCHY FEET AND GYM GOERSPatchy Feet
Combination of too much tan, sweaty feet and not exfoliating your foot but if we look up the foot we can see it really is too much tan and the customer may have put their shoes on straight after their tan, heading back to work and their feet have been sweaty and the tan has gone off into their shoes. The Fix Exfoliate the feet before a tan, put a little less product on of if you're a gym bunnie lightly moisturise your feet before going for your tan or try blending with moisturiser after you have tanned, helps to fade more evenly. SWEATY PATCHY FEET: Gym goers and feet sweat......summer does pose some challenges for tanning, this lovely customer turned up yesterday and let me take a photo of her feet. She had been using a gradual tan and going to the gym daily with shoes and socks, unfortunately if you haven't scrubbed your feet this will be the out come. When spray-tanning we try to blend into the feet and not put as much tan so it will look more natural.
THE FIX: Exfoliate with a flannel very well before tanning as most people forget about their feet, same goes for around the underarm bra strap area. Try putting on some moisturiser before your tan or after to blend this will help to blend and make it fade more evenly. For the top photos I applied baking soda and lemon juice to exfoliate the tan off, you can see the before during and after. Ready for another tan hahah. |

TINA VERSICOLOR (spotty skin, tan repeller)
Tina Versicolor: This is what it can look like immediately after a spray tan, but dont panic there are other reason for this too, like creams, wax residue, moisturiser, shaving immediately before a tan or any oils on the body. We are all different and each persons skin is unique but here and below are examples of things that can go wrong and why.
THE FIX: if your tan has already developed not much can be done, but rub a flannel over the area to try to even out the tan. If you notice this immediately or within the first few hours try using glad wrap and blending it in as it might have been your wax residue or moisturiser, baby oil you have used, you can even add a little moisturiser to make it blend, if you do this and after 8 hours you can still see white marks, might pay to see a doctor to just check it's not Tinea. Remember dont panic its very common.
Here is what one client told us.
Tinea Versicolour - I managed to get rid of patchy upper arms in 2 days I went searching for natural products to use and one site recommended antibacterial soap so I brought Protex sensitive gone in 48 hours so nice cheap fix. If I hadn't come for a spray tan I never would have known what it was. Other natural products that people used were Apple cider Vinegar applied to the area....stinky and Tee Tree Oil. No more scabie arms for me

WHITE ARMPITS
Sweaty Pits: This happens a lot in summer these pictures are an extreme case. In picture one we can see the exfoliating marks. This can also happen from poor application from the technician. If this happens to you here is what you can do.
The Fix: When your tan has developed have your usual wash but grab a flannel and try to exfoliate around the area so as to try to blend it out. Ring your tanning technician and let them know you need to come back in to have your tan blended, this will fix the problem in a case like this. If yours is just little white patches do the same thing then apply either bronzer to cover to some "Chocolate tanning cream"

HOME TANNING
The Streaky Tan: These tans are from home tanning and is caused by bad application, we can see how the white bit has clearly been missed. Both of these tans were done at home and they were probably blending with their hands. Using a glove and a lotion that you can see the tan going on helps to stop this. Another reason this could happen is how you sit or what you do immediately after your tan. The first photo is a simple mistake to make missing that bit is really common but the second photo, heck girl what did you do. You can clearly see she didn't do a good job and the bit by her ankle would suggest it was even dripping when she was applying. Another reason is hoping into bed and sleeping and sweating. Sweating while your tan is developing can cause big white patches.
The Fix: Tan in front of a mirror so you can see it going on. USE a glove and if you can get one use the Velvet Blending Glove. If the tan on the left was done by your technician (yes I have seen this done and is common when technicians are learning) please ring them so they can learn from your streaky tan, they can give you a free one (hopefully) and learn not to do it again. Apply some home tan to match it up or return to your tanner to get them to fix it. If you hate your tan all round rub a flannel between the two differentiating lines to blend it out, the photo on the right well shes just a mess get it done by a professional next time.

MATURE SKIN
Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis:
This, though it looks like the above is in fact Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis. This is a normal age related change and is completely harmless. Some people confuse this with the above, however a spray tan can certainly make this look better.
There is no need for anything medical this is just an aging process.

want to be really dark without all these horrible photos happening, try our Dark Chocolate tans

BAD TANNING PRACTICES
BAD Tanning Practices: the little creases in the knuckle can happen in your knees as well, the top of the foot being the jandal mark can be fixed with the TUP Under the foot is just bad tanning practices, I know it can be messy but a towel on the floor can fix this or ask if your tanner has any sticky feet (these are stickers that go under your foot while tanning and removed and binned after. The hand is again dirty equipment.
THE FIX: Bend your knees when tanning, make your hand a claw not flat when your tanner is doing your arms, the top of the foot can be blended by a skilled tanning technician or use the Touch Up Pen or some other at home tanning product, personally I like it as it looks like a real tan. Dirty equipment is fixed by the obvious, (cleaning) and carry wipes and flannel in your salon so your client NEVER leaves looking like any of these images.

FACE TANNING
The Lip Grab: We dont mean to pick on you Lindsey but we have seen this one too, this tends to be on young pubescent teenagers and they usually have a bit of lip fuzz too and the tan tends to grab around the mouth area which can turn out like this photo of Lindsay. You can also get the 'under the armpit' grab but with a trained technician this shouldn't happen.
The Fix: Invest in a face tanning cream while avoiding putting too much on in that area. Fix it with a bronzer or foundation to blend perfectly till it exfoliates from the face. Using any face products with AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) in it will exfoliate the face gently.

CRACKED CROCODILE
The crocodile look is achieved by continual tanning on top of each other and also, but not usually, can be caused through dry skin this also happens if you are an extremist at exfoliating, a flannel is all that is really required once a week. Another reason for the crocodile look is those gradual tanners that you can buy in shops they tend do this as well.
The Fix: Apply less tan each week or you can try moisturising before your tan to hydrate your skin, this is usually caused by tan on top of tan and those over the counter gradual tanners are the worse offenders they create this.

BRA AND STRAP LINES
Bra Strap Lines: Well we all know how we get them.
The Fix: "Thou shall go naked next time", or grab a handy TUP Touch Up Pen to tidy it up a few hours before you go out.
TOILET STAINS
OMG what is that
That is what you do not want to leave behind after you have been to the toilet. Brown marks on the toilet seat.
THE FIX:
After you have had a tan make sure when you go to the toilet that you either line the seat or wipe afterwards. No one wants to go to the bathroom and see that.

RAINDROPS
The Rain Drops: If this happens to you after your spraytan, immediately get your self to the bathroom or nearest dry sheltered place and start blending with your hands because if you dont your tan will stay that way not to mention ruin your outfit.
The Fix: If your tan has already developed or been on your for 5 or so hours then your all good, it might look a bit funny in the meantime but it is not going to ruin your tan and when you wash your tan should look normal but if you have just had a tan then you need to immediately blend or completely wash your tan and start again. Cling wrap is great for blending at home. Remember if its raining where clothes that cover your entire body so this doesn't happen.

VELVET BLENDING GLOVE
Velvet Blending Glove
Let me share how to use your VBG to get the most out of it. Its starts out as this beautiful soft plush glove and can end up looking like something you found under your house. The Velvet Blending Glove is for use with our Instant Tanning Spray and will not last long using it with our Chocolate Tanning Cream. Spray onto the glove then gently (GENTLY) wipe onto body and then blend, now when we say blend we mean gentle pressure to blend out the tan, not only does this make your tan more even but your glove will last 10 times longer than if you rub hard. The image of the glove below happens when rubbing to hard and the whole thing rips. If you wipe onto your body and blend before spraying again your glove should feel dry so when you have finished tanning your glorious body your glove should feel dry and there is no need to wash it out or rinse it under water. If you feel it is getting really mucky then by all means run it under the tap but remember its velvet and velvet means GENTLE. |
PATCHY FEET
Patchy feet is again achieved by too much tan and for some people the tan just grabs and some, the tan doesn't stick at all. If your technician is experienced then this should not happen as we dont tend to spray feet, it just mists down onto the feet making it blend perfectly.
Some Gym Bunnies get lines around their feet where their shoes have been, if this happens to you tell your tanner you are a gym bunny so they avoid putting too much on your feet.
The Fix: Use an exfoliating glove to rub off as much tan as you can and for the stubborn bits try using an old toothbrush and some baking soda. Apply tan over the top will make it look better but dont put to much on this time round.

.Tanned Hands
Found this girl on the internet saying she had a bad spray tan but unless the tanning technician opened her palms up and sprayed directly onto her hand then this is from home application and not wearing gloves. Hands will stain immediately so always use the gloves provided

TAN REMOVERS
OTHER ITEMS FOR REMOVING YOUR SPRAY TAN
I PERSONALLY HAVE TRIED THE MAGIC WHITE SPONGE AND WHILE IT WAS AMAZING I WAS CARELESS AND ENDED UP REMOVING SO MUCH SKIN THAT IT WAS LIKE I HAD GRAZED MYSELF SO WE DON'T REALLY RECOMMEND USING THAT BUT FOR FEET AREA IT WAS VERY GOOD. THE WHITE MAGIC IS A NANO SPONGE AND CAN GET THOSE EXTRA LITTLE STUBBORN BITS OFF BUT BE WARNED IT SAYS ON THE PACKET NO NOT PUT ON SKIN. I HAVE USED THIS ON MY FEET AND IT WAS MAGIC BUT IT DOES LEAVE YOUR SKIN A LITTLE RAW SO PUT SOME COCONUT OIL ON AFTER. THIS IS NOT FOR THE BODY AS YOU WILL END UP WITH BURN MARKS AND I DON'T EVEN LIKE TO ENDORSE THIS SPONGE FOR FEAR SOME OF YOU WILL GO FOR GOLD BUT IT REALLY DOES GET THE STUBBORN BITS OFF YOUR FEET IF YOU ARE A TANA'HOIC - SO BE WARNED IT IS NOT FOR THE BODY. ANOTHER FANTASTIC PRODUCT IS BLACK PUMICE, WHILE HOLIDAYING IN NEW YORK I WAS STAYING WITH FAMILY AND THEY HAD ONE IN THEIR BATHROOM. MY TAN WAS STARTING TO FADE AND I PICKED IT UP AND USED IT AND WAS IMMEDIATELY IN AWE OF THIS AMAZING BLACK MAGICAL TAN REMOVER . SO BLACK PUMICE IS OUR GO TO AND SOON WE WILL BE STOCKING IT AS IT IS FANTASTIC. SUGAR SCRUBS, BAKING SODA , FLANNELS AND ROLLING AROUND ON THE BEACH ARE ALL GOOD SKIN EXFOLIATORS AND FAILING ALL OF THOSE, HEAD TO YOUR LOCAL HOT POOLS AND SIT IN A CHLORINATED SPA FOR A FEW HOURS TO BLEACH YOUR SKIN WHITE. |
Home Remedies
THE LEMON MIX: Grab a lemon slice it up, rub the lemon in your hands till your hands are all wet with lemon then add half a teaspoon of baking soda and rub onto area where you want to exfoliate. Great for stubborn tan marks as the lemon bleaches the tan to make is less. THE BROWN SUGAR SCRUB 2 cups of brown goodness 1/2 cup olive oil / coconut oil or any plant based oil such as sunflower or almond. 1/4 honey 1 teaspoon vanilla combine all together and voila, this keeps well and doesn't need to be refrigerated. Grab a jar from JarObsession and make your own. EXFOLIATING TIPS:
